The Chamber of Commerce of the Moriches recently awarded two students scholarships during the Center Moriches High School awards ceremony held last month.

The Business Student of the Year was named as Abigail Schaming, the chamber’s September Business Student of the Month. Schaming committed to SUNY Oswego with a major in marketing. She is the president of the DECA Club, a varsity tennis player, a member of the National Honor Societies, and is on the Principal’s Honor Roll.

This award, according to the chamber, was given to a graduating senior with an interest in a career that is business oriented. Schaming was also selected for her involvement in the school and community while also excelling academically. She received $1,000 from the chamber.

In addition, Jillian Ryan was named the Moriches Citizenship Award winner by the chamber. The scholarship recognizes citizenship within the community and school and requires an essay to win. She won $500 from the chamber.

Ryan is also this year’s Center Moriches High School valedictorian. Ryan has a 104.99 GPA and will be attending Cornell University majoring in environmental engineering. During her time in high school, she served as the vice president of the Class of 2023. She was also involved in six honor societies: the National Honor Society, English Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Math Honor Society and Science Honor Society. Ryan has also been named to the Academic High Honor Roll and has been recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors. Her extracurricular involvement extends to the Ecology Club, Friends and Buddies Club, Future Teachers’ Club and Peer Leadership Club.

Ryan is an active member of the Center Moriches community. She is a volunteer with the Moriches Bay Project, where she helped improve the water quality of the Moriches Bay through fundraisers and beach cleanups. Additionally, Ryan is a manager at Barn Blue family farm and a head counselor at Pony Camp, where she gives horseback-riding lessons and teaches children how to care for animals.
