No local damage reported from earthquake

A rare New Jersey earthquake ranked 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale was reported on April 5 at 10:23 a.m.

According to Gov. Kathy Hochul, the earthquake hit west of Manhattan and was felt throughout New York including Long Island.

“My team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day,” she wrote on X.

She later reported there were no reports of major damage or injuries and suggested New Yorkers continue with their day.

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine also reported no damage.

“No major incidents have been reported at this time,” he released in a statement. “The Office of Emergency Management continues to monitor the situation and my office is in communication with our region’s local governments, hospitals, and emergency management agencies.”

The Suffolk County Water Authority reported no damage from the earthquake from their facilities.

“All well fields are being reviewed to ensure there were no impacts. Shifting ground has the potential to impact our distribution system,” reported chairman Charles Lefkowitz. “With over 6,000 miles of water mains, SCWA will take increased measures to monitor through the next few days for main breaks.”
