On Saturday, May 13, the Friends of the Bayport-Blue Point Library hosted a book signing for local author and program educator at the library, Kristin Yook.

Yook’s book, “Five Little Seals,” was published by ImagineWe, a full-service, and comprehensive publishing company established in 2016.

IWP publishes books of all reading levels and specialize in “mission-motivated and cause-driven literature that spreads awareness.”

Yook said she was overwhelmed and honored at the community support of her book, with close to 100 people attend- ing the event.

“I had thought this would just be a book for the parents of the children I host my library program for, but it seems to have grown,” said Yook.

The Friends purchased copies of “Five Little Seals” pre-ordered from the publisher, with a portion of proceeds going to benefit the organization.

Taking inspiration from another song for a finger play, “Five Little Ducks,” Yook reimagined the lyrics for seals as her seal finger puppet, Cuddles, proved to be popular with children.

The book is recommended from pre- school to second grade based on its read- ability, but Yook said that children as young as toddlers and even babies can benefit from the language and listening skills utilized by the literature.

“It promotes hand-eye coordination and fine-motor skills,” said Yook.

The book also gives commands to the young readers to reach their arms “up high” and to follow a sequence of events.

While Yook does not consider herself an author or a writer, her impressive background in school psychology played a role in her ability to craft a child-oriented tale for parents to practice learn- ing skills.

Music is something that Yook cited as being "joyous” and helpful in children from birth to age 5 to learn, especially since it is conducive to family time.

“Music is universal; it brings people together,” said Yook.

With “Five Little Seals,” toddlers are asked to engage in something tactile, which Yook said is “more entertaining” for the younger audiences.

Even early subtraction and addition skills are incorporated into the lesson, as readers have to count their fingers.

There is community and publisher interest in Yook making a series of books on the finger plays she teaches at the library, and Yook said she is open to the idea.

Ronnie Devine, president of the Board of Trustees, said, “We truly welcome our library hosting such wonderful events as reading and book signings by talented authors.”

Echoing his sentiments was Bay- port-Blue Point Library director Mike Firestone, who said how “excited” the library was to be a part of Yook’s launch day. As a local author, programmer, and resident, Firestone said it was a “no-brainer” to support Yook’s endeavor.

“Our Friends of the Library were even able to use the books as a small fundraiser, so it was a win for everyone.”
