The William Floyd Colonials varsity football team, led by head coach Paul Longo, are Suffolk County champions for the 14th time in the program’s illustrious history!
On Friday night, Nov. 17, at Stony Brook University’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, the Colonials put forth an all-around team effort to defeat Sachem North 26-9 in front of an energetic crowd of “Floyd Strong” supporters!
Next up for the Colonials is the Long Island Division I Championship game at Hofstra University against Massapequa on Friday, Nov. 24 at 12 pm. Tickets cost $11 each to purchase.
In the Suffolk County Championship game, the No. 1 ranked Colonials excelled in all phases of the game—offense, defense and special teams—with quarterback A.J. Cannet passing for 201 yards and a touchdown, and Geo Alvarez catching three balls for 155 yards and a score. In the backfield, Jaden Montalvo ran 15 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns, with Ja’quan Thomas also rushing for 82 yards and a score to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Newsday named Montalvo a “Gridiron Great” for his efforts.
On the defensive side of the ball, Wally Crane, Jay’don Peacock and Joshua Jordan had one interception each as the Colonials kept their opponent to single digit points for the sixth time this season. Aaron Fisher and Justice Darling had two sacks each, and adding one sack each were Dylan Tenes, Derek Amato and Jaden Montalvo.
Leading the Colonials in tackles were Aaron Fisher (14), Justice Darling (13), Wally Crane (12), Javon Delaney (9), Dylan Tenes (8), Matt Campos (5), Caden Lesiewicz (5), Kris Watkins (3), Derek Amato (3), Jay’don Peacock (2), Aydan Brown (2), Kareem Esperant (2), Zamari Wilkins (2), Spencer Link (1), David Gonzalez (1) and Jaden Montalvo (1). Recording tackles for a loss were Darling (4), Fisher (2), along with one apiece for Tenes, Campos, Amato and Montalvo.
So far, six Colonials have earned All-County honors this season, including Caden Lesiewicz, Geo Alvarez, Aaron Fisher, Wally Crane, Javon Delaney and Derek Amato. More awards will be announced after the season concludes.
