Brightwaters Memorial Day ceremony

On Saturday, May 28, the Village of Brightwaters held their annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Ackerson Plaza at the head of the harbor. Despite the clouds, the rain held up for the ceremony, with Tommy “Duck” Sennes serenading attendees with music as they arrived. Chaplain Chet Striplin said an opening prayer for those gathered, followed by a bagpipe performance by Victor Vaccaro. The Pledge of Allegiance was performed by Girl Scouts from Troops 432 and 782. The national anthem was sung by Diedra and Kelly Carmichael. Islip town councilman and U.S. Navy veteran Capt. John Cochrane Jr. was one of the guest speakers at the ceremony. Cochrane, who is a Brightwaters resident, spoke about the importance of Memorial Day honoring those who gave all in service to the country. U.S. Navy veteran Cathie-Norton Doherty was the second speaker at the event. Doherty spoke about why we should stop saying “Happy” Memorial Day, as it is not a happy occasion but rather one to honor those who died. Doherty also spoke about the importance of helping and contributing to local organizations that help veterans on Long Island. The guest speakers were rounded out by mayor Valdini, who spoke of local veterans from the Bay Shore-Brightwaters area. Taps was performed by Vinny Cassidy of American Legion Post 1738 in West Islip.
