Where they were and the good place that emerged

Remembering Sept. 11, 2001

Those of a certain age remember where they were and what they did, when militants associated with the extremist Al Qaeda group hijacked four planes and carried out suicide attacks against the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were hit with two planes; a third struck the Pentagon military headquarters; and a fourth crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pa., after passengers fought with the terrorists to redirect their intended target. Nearly 3,000 people were killed including loved ones from the area, and many first responders from the local hamlets pitched in at Ground Zero.  The following people share their experiences at the time and the community space that emerged—The Common Ground at Rotary Park, which is a beautiful space for concerts, meditative walks on the labyrinth, yoga, informal gatherings for groups, and the pet parade.
