William Floyd Middle School eighth grader and trumpet player Jack Meyer recently received a $500 Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) scholarship to go toward summer study. This scholarship, one of only 20 awarded to students across Suffolk County, will be used toward private lessons to diversify his instruments and learn the trombone.

“I am so proud of Jack and his musical accomplishments,” said Dawn Conefry, band director, William Floyd Middle School. “He has worked very hard over the last three years in band, and I have no doubt that he will use these private lessons to improve his performance as he advances into the high school ensembles.”

Jack is a member of the William Floyd Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade band, the William Floyd Middle School Jazz Band and the William Floyd Middle School Mixed Choir. He is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, student ambassadors, the varsity wrestling team and the junior varsity soccer and junior varsity lacrosse teams. He volunteers at community cleanups and helps to coach youth sports, all while being a great brother to seven siblings at home.

Each year, SCMEA awards scholarships to deserving students for their annual summer study. Jack’s scholarship is part of an annual memorial scholarship honoring Joseph F. Andreucci Sr., a former music teacher and administrator for Islip public schools. Jack completed an application that included his impressive resume as a young and aspiring musician along with a personal statement.
