Summer reading made fun at CM Free Public Library

Posted

According to Center Moriches Free Public Library director Marcie Litjens, whether you’re headed on vacation, going to the beach, or just having some downtime relax, there is always time to read a book.

“Studies show that children who do not read over the summer can experience the ‘summer slide,’ losing some of the reading skills and knowledge gained during the school year,” said head of the Children’s Department, Margie Decaro.

Library members are now able to come to the library and sign up for the Summer Reading Club.  Registration is currently ongoing and ends on Saturday, July 31, with programs for adults, teens and children.

Each age group, according to Litjens, all has their own individual club and lots of exciting prizes to earn or win.

“This year’s theme is ‘Unearth a Story’ and adults, teens and children have a variety of ‘dino-mite’ prizes to earn,” she said.

The Summer Reading Club, according to Litjens and Decaro, is so important to teens for a multitude of reasons.  They hope to encourage teens to read over the summer to not only improve their reading skills but develop critical thinking.

“If we can get our teens to continue to read over the summer, we are helping them develop lifelong reading habits,” said Decaro.

Reading records must be logged by Aug. 15 to receive prizes.

ADULT CLUB

This summer, grab your shovel—and a bookmark!

For every book read, participants will get the chance to win gift cards. Starting July 1, readers will receive a fun summer prize for reading just one book and showing the library their updated Center Moriches Free Public Library Card.

This year, in addition to giving out a Center Moriches Free Public Library beach bag with attached sunscreen for reading one book after enrolling in the Summer Reading Club, the Adult Department will also be doing a special summer edition of their popular Bookish Bingo program.

This is a self-led reading challenge, where readers will cross off different prompts on a bingo sheet available at the reference desk and once they get “bingo,” they’re entered for a special summer gift card.

TEEN CLUB

The Teen Department is ready to “Unearth a Story!”

Whether they like reading biographies, fiction, or graphic novels, the library said they have something perfect for them to read.  For each book read this summer, teens can put a raffle ticket in to win some gift cards and the chance to win the grand prize of a metal detector if they complete the entire six book challenge.
