Michelle Steinmann and Adrian Fields grew up together in Sayville and are now bringing a new shop to South Main Street.
The Sayville Serotonin Supply, which soft opened just last week, has two purposes: the front, a gift shop with hundreds of fun items to purchase, while the back has individual mini rooms with body roll machines—specially designed to give one a touch-free lymphatic massage.
It all started last year when Fields, who is also a therapist with her firm, Adrian Fields and Associates, realized that many of her clients didn’t know where to shop for things that would bring them joy.
“People would ask me, ‘Where can I find a journal?’” she said.
That sparked an idea. An empty storefront on the corner of Main and Gillette sat vacant across from her flagship office, located at 17 Main Street. She asked her friend, Steinmann, to be its face behind the counter.
“I thought I’d be able to fill up a store with things that will bring you serotonin,” she said. “Then I’d be able to tell my clients to head across the road to grab themselves something that would make them smile.”
She took over the lease of the former Cottage in the City storefront at 2 South Main Street in June of last year. A month later, she found out she was pregnant, slightly delaying construction and an opening. Four months later, in November, a fire burned her therapy office to the ground, along with several other local businesses.
But that didn’t stop her from opening the store because, although her office was gone, she still wanted a local shop that can bring people a little bit of happiness when they needed it most.
She began shopping around for self-help books, health and beauty items, house décor and Sayville swag. She designed adult coloring books, therapy journals, and her own potpourri candles.
“I want you to come in and treat yourself,” she said.
On top of that, before her pregnancy, Fields was scrolling through TikTok when she found videos of the body roll machine. She was interested in it because, as a therapist, she said her health was declining due to sitting in a chair all day. The body roll machine advertised all different types of benefits: alleviate muscle tension, boost metabolism, reduce the visibility of cellulite, help aid with better sleep, and provide a touch-free full-body massage. The only problem was that the closest location was in Manhattan.
“I haven’t seen anything like it on Long Island,” Fields said. “And it feels really good.”
For just $32 for a first-time roll, Steinmann said the Serotonin Supply’s prices are 20 percent less than the Manhattan location.
“We wanted to make the prices as reasonable as possible,” she said.
Upon arrival, clients are positioned through different positions on the roller, starting from the feet to the arms, with a video guiding the way. It’s easy, relaxing and fun.
“I’m usually one big knot, so it feels great for me,” Steinmann laughed.
So, despite some life changes and some setbacks, the Sayville Serotonin Supply is bound to be the town’s new favorite shop and spa, thanks to these two friends who decided to partner together and spread some sunshine upon a town that could use some rays.
The Sayville Serotonin Supply is open Wednesdays and Thursdays 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., with extended hours soon. Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for updated hours.
