Sayville cross country makes history as state champs

For the first time in the program’s history, Sayville girls varsity cross country are New York State champions! Bringing home the NYSPHSAA Class B state title capped off a banner year for the Golden Flashes, after coach Tom Duffy’s team won their third-consecutive Suffolk County championship and walked away all league and all division champions. Their showing at states earned them entry into the elite New York State Federation meet, also a first for the district.
Overladen with trophies and draped in medals, it’s the New York State Federation run that the girls are the proudest of. Held at Bowdoin Park, the Fed race is made up of all qualifying New York teams, both private and public, regardless of division or class.

Junior Mullane Baumiller ran a personal best at 19 minutes, 19.3 seconds on the 5-kilometer course. Coming in 15th, she was the highest-ranking Long Islander in the race. Sayville came in 4th overall as a team.

To mark the momentous occasion, Sayville athletic director Ryan Cox, with help from the Sayville and West Sayville fire departments, held a car parade through downtown Main Street on Sunday, Nov. 20.
“There’s so much to be proud of,” Duffy said of the history-making season. “They’ve worked so hard over the years and look what they’ve accomplished! It’s incredible.”
