Josephine Champlin is looking to move to Center Moriches with her husband. They were married earlier this year. Champlin, a 2009 Bellport High School alumna, said the move comes out of love for her new job.

Champlin, 30, is the newest physician at Northwell’s Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was raised on Long Island grew up in East Patchogue, and ventured out to SUNY Geneseo for her undergrad and then attended med school at NYIT in Old Westbury. She took her residency at Peconic Bay and “fell in love” with the hospital. Now, she works full-time in the hospital’s outpatient clinic.

“I like that all over the hospital and outpatient office have a small-town feel,” she said. “You get to know your patients with great continuity of care.”

She also noted the sense of security in having Northwell backing the system.

“We have a lot of resources in terms of training,” she added. “It’s been fantastic.”

She was hired full-time as of July 9 and will be spending her time at the outpatient center four days a week, also working per-diem shifts in the main hospital on the weekends.

“I am certified to see anyone—newborns to death,” she said, explaining she has already seen 11-year-olds, 90-year-olds and conducted primary care exams for women in good health.

As for becoming a doctor during the COVID-19 pandemic, she said it was certainly an interesting time.

“I feel it has made me a stronger doctor,” she said. “It has really taught some resilience working long hours with patients who were really, really sick.”

In her free time, Champlin enjoys dancing, often teaching classes at Star Lite in Medford, and baking for her side business, Dessert Doc Jo.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Champlin, a graduate of our Family Medicine residency, to our team as we expand family and specialty care in Center Moriches,” said Amy E. Loeb, Ed.D, MBA, RN, executive director at PBMC. “It’s vital to have well-trained family physicians to care for residents in any community, and the entire Moriches area will benefit from her experience training alongside our top physicians.”
