‘Off-Bottom’ Oyster seeding

On July 7, Brookhaven Town supervisor Ed Romaine and deputy supervisor Dan Panico were at the Moriches Yacht Club for the Moriches Bay Project’s 11th Oyster “Off-Bottom” seeding event. During this event, small oysters are placed in plastic, porous cages and suspended off the bottom of the bay. This protects the oysters from predators and allows them to significantly grow before being released. Founded by Westhampton residents Laura Fabrizio and Aram Terchunian, the Moriches Bay Project works to improve the water quality in Moriches Bay through oyster farming and education. Since being established in 2012, the group has planted more than two million oysters in the bay and made numerous educational presentations at local schools.
