This past Saturday, April 19, protestors took to demonstrating in front of congressman Andrew Garbarino’s (R-2nd District) office in Patchogue.
Part of the “50501” movement — named for the idea of 50 protests, taking place in 50 states, over the course of a single day in February —that inspired a “Hands Off!” national day of action on April 5, the Patchogue protest on April 19 was part of nationwide protests against president Donald Trump.
Although multiple protestors on social media cited “thousands” of participants on Saturday, the Suffolk County Police Department did not have an official estimate on the crowd size.
Setauket Patriots, a pro-Trump group, also demonstrated against the crowds critical of the president’s policies.
The Suffolk County Democrats issued the following statement, “Long Island once again demonstrated to Andrew Garbarino, Musk, and Trump that we want their hands off our Constitution and our democracy. We stood out here today to protect our elderly, our disabled, children, our black and brown siblings, our LGBTQ+ siblings, and we’ll continue to do so until Republicans either get the message or we turf them out of office.”
Garbarino said “I always appreciate hearing from my constituents about the issues that matter most to them. My focus remains on delivering results for New York’s 2nd District and being a strong voice for my constituents in Washington.”
On Wednesday, April 22, John Cino, the curator for the Patchogue Arts Council held a protest in front of Garbarino’s office where he read Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax” as an Earth Day protest for Trump policies, specifically on climate change.
