Last month, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery donated the new Center Moriches welcome sign, which has been installed at the corner of Montauk Highway and Chet Swezey Road, the Haven’s Property.
“With the Haven’s property behind it, it’s really picturesque,” said Downtown Beautification board member and past president Suzanne McKeon, who helped facilitate the new sign.
The original sign, which sat on a county-owned grassy knoll slightly farther east on Montauk Highway, had been repainted over the years until it eventually deteriorated behind repair, McKeon explained.
The new sign is essentially a duplicated version of the entrance sign from the west on Frowein Road. The town attempted to help replace the sign by applying for grants; however, none of the attempts were successful.
Steve Scerri, superintendent of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Center Moriches, said he decided to donate the sign on behalf of the cemetery.
“Center Moriches never had a sign on the east end of town,” he said of the reason behind coming forward to help beautify the area.
The sign, which costs just over $2,000, was designed and made by East End Sign Design.
“Steve was so nice and wonderful to hear we needed a new sign and offered to pay for it,” added McKeon, noting the chamber is grateful.
