Mother’s Day roundup

Some local family fun

Posted

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we’ve rounded up some fun activities and gift ideas from right in our area. Our list is all about showering mom with the love and affection she deserves. All of these ideas are from right in our backyard, in the Moriches and Manorville.

What are you doing for mom this year? We’d love to know. Tag us on Facebook @TheTideofMorichesandManorville to take part in the community conversation. Don’t forget—this year, Mother’s Day will be held on Sunday, May 8.

Find a budget-friendly gift at a local yard sale

Finding the perfect gift for mom doesn’t need to break the bank—and, at the time, your money can go towards a great cause, because Helping Makes U Happy (HMUH) is hosting its annual community yard sale on Saturday, May 7 at 1 Neville Street in Center Moriches, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The best part is, HMUH is doing a Mother’s Day raffle, so you might actually win something cool for mom, while also scoring her an awesome, new, never-worn outfit or psychedelic lava lamp (you never know what you’re going to find at a yard sale, right?). They’ll be doing a Father’s Day raffle at the yard sale, too; the winner for that will be picked in June.

Visit your neighborhood florist for a beautiful bouquet of flowers

Nothing says Mother’s Day like presenting mom or grandma with a big bouquet of flowers. Perhaps a dozen roses or a colorful pack of tulips, or some fragrant hydrangeas—the choice is yours.  Luckily, here in the Moriches and Manorville, we have community florists that truly know their business and do a great job of bringing your floral dreams to life, including Center Moriches’ Boulevard Florist.

Make something special

In general, moms have a sweet spot for anything homemade, especially when it’s made by someone they love. As little kids, handmade gifts are commonplace, from thumbprint ornaments to macaroni wall hangings to paperclip necklaces. But as we get older, we forget the entire option. This year, put a smile on mom’s face with something handmade. Might we suggest sewing her something special? Little Miss Sew It All in Manorville ran a Mother’s Day potholder-making class until April 30—but sewing supplies can be purchased there all of the time.

Take mom out for some fun

In addition to a thoughtful gift, bring mom out for a good time. Visit Harbes Farm for their annual Mother’s Day Festival at 715 Sound Avenue in Mattituck. The festival runs on May 7 and 8. According to their website, the farm is offering all moms free admission to Harbes Barnyard Adventure, an 8-acre family experience, complete with a musical hayride tour, pig races, and activities. The weekend is slated to feature live music both days, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
