MBGC: Gardening in April

Posted

Gardeners enjoy the warmer weather and longer days of April because they can get started with organizing and planning what changes they want to make for this year.  Moving plants around, installing new perennials and sharing extra plants are all chores that gardeners love.  Everything is clean and fresh in the spring; it's the right time to create a new flower bed or try a new perennial.  And gardeners love to visit their local nurseries to see what they have that is new.

Last month was the the President's Council Meeting at the Planting Fields Arboretum Conference Center in Oyster Bay.  The main speaker was Fred Gerber from the Queens Botanical Garden; his topic was "Sustainable Plants in our Environment."   Several members went and enjoyed the program.  Also a group of MBGC members went to the Philadelphia flower show.

We had to cancel last months' meeting but we are looking forward to our April meeting on the sixteenth.  Diane Schwindt of the Kethcham Inn Foundation will be our guest speaker this month.  She will entertain us with commentary and floral designs of a bygone era.

April twenty-fourth is Arbor day.   The National Garden Club has asked each one of their 165,000 member to plant one tree.  So I'll ask you to take a minute and plant a native tree; how about  salix discolor (pussy willow).
