Early last month, on May 5, the Center Moriches Library’s Walking Club began its first walk of the season.

“Put your sneakers on, meet at the library and get ready to make new friends,” said Marcie Litjens, library director. “Starting the day with a walk is a great way to strengthen your body and walking with others builds a sense of connection within the community.”

The program is run by Litjens and Margie DeCaro, head of the children’s department. The program includes a casual 2-mile walk around town.

“I enjoy walking with Walking Club because it’s a great way to connect with others and get some exercise,” added walker Deanna Urban.

The club meets Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m.; inclement weather cancels. All are welcome to join.

As for the new balloon recycling program, the library has partnered with a Long Island-based organization, Balloon Mission. The idea is to help keep balloon waste out of the landfills and local waters.

Library patrons can now save used balloons, both latex and mylar, as well as the string after their celebrations and place them in the receptacle located in the hallway adjacent to the plastic and eyeglass recycling collection bins.

“Balloon recycling is a simple but meaningful way to reduce waste,” Litjens said, proud of the project. “As a coastal community, we understand the importance of protecting our waterways and wildlife from litter and pollution. Making small changes such as recycling balloons can make a long-lasting impact.”

The initiative is part of the library’s effort towards obtaining the Sustainable Libraries Certification. They are currently  84 percent of the way completed with the initiative that includes a commitment to environmental stewardship, economic feasibility and social equity.

“The library is the center of the the community and recycling is easier than ever with convenient ways to drop off recyclable materials, and this is one more way we can all contribute to a better world,” said Lisa Ferguson, Sustainability Team member.
