Help feed your neighbors

Posted

At Helping Makes U Happy, July is all about feeding our neighbors in need.  We are very excited to be sponsoring the new Blessing Box, which was donated by Neighbors Being Human, and installed near the sidewalk in front of St. John's Episcopal Church on Railroad Avenue in Center Moriches.

The box is being filled weekly (sometimes twice weekly) with nonperishable items and some occasional dry goods like new work gloves, socks, etc., by interested groups and community members, and is available for anyone in need of a little extra. Maybe you can't get to a food pantry at the day/time it's open, maybe you just ran short. We are trying to make a weekly plan, so if you are a group or family who'd be interested in replenishing the box on a Wednesday, and monitoring/replenishing needed items during the week until the following Wednesday, please call us at 631-848-9008, or email helpingmakesuhappy.org. It's a great way to spend some family time for a good cause, and to show children how easy it is to help others. Of course donations from individual community members are welcome; we just ask that you please be mindful of expiration dates.

July 5 starts our sixth Summer of Feeding Families, which will run weekly, ending Aug. 31 with our final food delivery accompanied by a new backpack filled with school supplies.  The families we help are local families, referred by the schools.  We collect/purchase nonperishables with our volunteers and sort/pack them up in boxes which are then delivered every Tuesday to the families.

We gratefully accept donations—last year we delivered over 11,000 pounds of food during the summer—and fresh eggs and fruits/vegetables are always welcome. Last year we accepted volunteers through SignUpGenius, which was posted to Facebook; but, as always, if you are interested in helping, nothing would make us happier, so feel free to contact us as described above.

Wishing you all a happy and safe Fourth of July!
