William Floyd’s girls basketball team swept the season series with Patchogue-Medford and improved its chances of making the playoffs with a 50-39 road win on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
The game was close early, with the Colonials up 15-14 at halftime. But Floyd sprinted ahead in the third quarter, outscoring the Raiders, 25-10.
Pat-Med battled on defense and mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, closing the gap to six points at 44-38 on Angie McGrath’s basket with 1:26 remaining.
That was as close as the Raiders got to the Colonials.
With the win, Floyd improved to 7-8 (4-4 in League I).
The Colonials need to win two of their four remaining league games to make the playoffs.
“League I is difficult,” Floyd head coach Rich Sinclair said. “Every game is a battle. You never know what you’re going to get next. Hopefully, we’ll continue to do well and make our way into the playoffs.”
Savannah Pantry led the Colonials with 22 points. Milania Farrow scored 11 points and Chloe Campbell added 8 points.
McGrath and Sophia Randazzo each scored 10 points for the Raiders.
This has been a rebuilding year for Pat-Med, which graduated seven players from last year’s squad, which made the playoffs. Among the players who graduated were two Newsday Top 100 players: Diamond Pertillar, who is playing at Five Towns College, and Alexis Bulson-Cuozzo, who is playing at Lasell University.
That’s meant new opportunities for this year’s seniors.
“Our seniors have stepped into new roles, and they’ve been learning and doing a great job,” Pat-Med coach Leighann Gallagher said. “We’re just chomping at the bit to get to the next level.”
The Raiders were eliminated from playoff contention with their 70-36 loss to Whitman on Jan. 23.
