Bay Shore BOE announces new superintendent

Steven J. Maloney, Bay Shore School District’s assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and administration, is expected to be the district’s new superintendent following the retirement of Joseph Bond.

Board of Education president Susan Gargan announced at the March 10 school board meeting that Maloney would fill the position.

“When we announced Mr. Bond’s retirement, there was understandably some concern about who would fill the position,” Gargan said. “Thankfully, we didn’t have to look far.”

Maloney, who graduated from Bay Shore in the 1980s, has not yet been appointed as superintendent. At the school board meeting, Gargan said the board will vote on his appointment at the March 24 public session. If elected, Maloney will assume the role of superintendent beginning July 1.

Maloney thanked the school board and district community at the meeting.

“I truly appreciate this opportunity. As a Bay Shore grad – I started in Bay Shore in 1973 in kindergarten – and after working in the district for the last 27 years, it’s a great way to end my career as the superintendent of Bay Shore,” he said. “I am looking forward to working closely with the students, board, administrators, teachers, and community to solidify Bay Shore’s reputation as one of the elite districts on Long Island.”

Last month, Bond announced he would be retiring at the end of the 2020-2021 academic year. The school board approved his resignation for retirement in February.

“I’m handing the baton to the right person,” Bond said. “The district couldn’t have chosen a better person for this. I’m really looking forward to seeing how he moves the district forward in the future. I have no doubt he will do a terrific job."

At the meeting, Maloney said that Bond will be greatly missed.

“For the past six years, Joe has been a pleasure to work with, and we’re going to miss him. He’s guided us through some very difficult times, especially this past year,” Maloney said. “We wish him a healthy retirement with his family.”

The school board is expected to approve the appointment of Maloney at the March 24 public session.
