A misfit toy-themed spirit crawl

Despite the Greater Sayville Food Pantry robbery, kind-hearted residents still abound in Sayville. On Saturday evening, 35 residents dressed in, well, misfit outfits, gathered first at the Portly Villager for A Misfit Toy Themed Spirit Crawl, then advanced to the Sayville Athletic Club, Station Pub and Bait & Tackle, all on Main Street, to have fun and give to charity.

“It’s for Sharing A Meal Soup Kitchen,” said participant James Bertsch, who dressed as the Misfit Lion with wings. “It’s $20 each that goes to Sharing A Meal Soup Kitchen and you got a wristband. Each bar owner agreed to a discounted drink. I had a QR code on my phone, so it would bring the contributor to the donation page.”

Jamie LaBelle, dressed as Yucon Cornelius, started it four years ago. LaBelle is a retired athletic director from the Plainedge School District. “He’s a powerlifter who trains Olympians in power lifting,” Bertsch said.

There were highlights besides the uproarious costumes. “Santa showed up,” said Bertsch of a gleeful participant. Also, we were late getting to the Station Pub and showed up in the middle of a drag contest.”

While the misfits didn’t win any prizes, they were a big hit there.

You can’t make this up, dear reader.

“The other highlight was that Jamie and his brother, dressed as an abominable snowman, rode an electric bike, bar to bar, with a blowup Rudolph strapped in the back.”
