The New York State Department of Transportation has pulled the plug on a proposed project that would have added an exit between William Floyd Parkway and Moriches-Middle Island Road. A notice published recently on the DOT website said the project would not be moving for- ward, and other renovations would take place instead to enhance safety at the intersection.
There was no reason given for the decision to halt the project. There is a 3.5-milegap between William Floyd Parkway and Moriches-Middle Island Road. The project would have brought the distance to 1.5 miles, which is more common for Long Island drivers, who experience shorter distances on most of the highway. Local civic groups were vocal about their opposition, calling on the state to stop the project so as to not disturb an environmentally sensitive area.
"In a time where there is so little to celebrate, it is important to remember that it is always possible to make change when people commit themselves to the task," said MaryAnn Johnston, president of Associated Brookhaven Civic Organizations. "ABCO, and I personally, want to thank NYS Senator Monica Martinez, who secured a comment time extension, that enabled us to organize. Special thanks to those who circulate petitions, securing 943 signatures in opposition, took time off to meet with Suffolk County Legislators Al Krupski and Rudy Sunderman as well as the NYSDOT officials. The community surrounding Barnes Road closed ranks and worked tirelessly to Save Barnes Road from needless the needless interchange and an unnecessary intrusion and destruction. We will stay vigilant."
