‘A Few of My Favorite Sings’

Local live music event organization Folkie Fest hosted its “A Few of My Favorite Sings” event at the Moriches Bay Recreation Facility on Feb. 25.

From 2 p.m. until 5 p.m., various musicians, including Bryan Gallo, James O’Malley, Maria Fairchild, Esme White and Kerry Kearney, performed live at the center in front of a local audience.  The event also served as a birthday celebration for event organizer Gail Field, whose birthday was earlier in February.  Money collected from the event was split among the musicians, the Moriches Community Center, and a sound technician; a 50/50” raffle at the event also raised money for Long Island Cares and the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

I truly enjoy artists performing their original works,” Folkie Fest event organizer Gail Field said.  “Theres something special and intimate hearing the words and music in the artists own voice.”

Some of the songs performed were original creations composed by the musicians themselves.  For example, James O’Malley performed his song “Allen Jones” from his album “Tales to Tell” (which could be purchased at the event).  The artists also performed songs written by other artists: Kerry Kearney performed “Love is Vain” by blues artist Robert Johnson as part of his set of songs.  Kearney also told anecdotes from his career before and after the songs he played.

“I can’t stop with the stories,” Kearney said during his set.

Folkie Fest events will be held in April and May, and that dates for summer performances at Moriches Field Brewing Company brewery will be revealed in the spring.
