It was one of the first major snowfalls of the winter season, but that didn’t stop eager Center Moriches residents from venturing in the early morning to the newest grocery store in town.
Lidl opened to the community on Dec. 11, with a ribbon cutting and giveaways for people brave enough to get in line early. The first 200 customers were greeted with a gift card ranging from $5 to $250.
“After touring the store, I think shoppers will be pleasantly surprised,” said councilman Dan Panico in a post on Facebook.
Lidl is a German-based grocer that first opened in 1973. The chain now operates 10,800 stores in 32 countries and employs over 280,000 people.
“We are happy to soon bring Lidl’s unique and fresh approach to grocery shopping to Long Island,” said Johannes Fieber, CEO of Lidl US in a statement announcing the opening. “Our new stores will allow customers to save time and money each week with a simple and efficient shopping experience. We also look forward to celebrating our grand openings with many familiar faces from the local Best Market teams.”
