Folkie Fest gears up for the 2024 season

February’s theme is “A Few of My Favorite Sings,” bringing a few of the organizer’s favorite performers to the stage. These include Robert Bruey and Kerry Kearney. The event will take place on Sunday, Feb. 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door or $10 in advance.

Robert Bruey’s music is honest and real, raw and meaningful, gritty and naturalistic. Kerry Kearney is best known as a slide guitar master. His style, music from the “Psychedelta,” is his own brand containing an upbeat mix of American blues and roots, created from writing and performing on the circuit for over 40 years. American roots musician Maria Fairchild, a dedicated “singer-song finder,” makes traditional music feel new, and contemporary songs, including her own, seem timeless. Bryan Gallo is a Long Island-based singer-songwriter inspired by late nights in bars, the backseats of cars, and the pressures and consequences of living life romantically. James O’Malley is considered by many to be the consummate songwriter; his songs take the listener on an emotional journey of family, relationships, human nature, or contemplation of life’s choices.

March will bring Women’s History Month; there will be “Unstoppable Women Making Herstory.” In May, “I am, I said” has performers sharing a song that defines them as an artist. Also, there will be two shows at the Moriches Field Brewing Company over the summer where they celebrate favorite folkies.

Folkie Fest is an ongoing concert series with local acoustic artists in the spirit of folk music as envisioned by the late Pete Seeger. They provide a listening space and support live, local, singer-songwriters sharing their original work. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the community center, and a 50/50 raffle is held to benefit Long Island Cares: The Harry Chapin Food Bank.
