Cassandra Levy, a Center Moriches resident, is a business intelligence analyst by day, but recently published her first children’s book: “The Sand Castle of Dreams.”

Levy, who moved to Center Moriches six years ago and grew up on the North Shore, initially started her journey by placing a “little free library” in her community. She wanted to promote reading in her community and figured this would be a good way to get involved.

“Books and libraries really build communities,” Levy said. “That’s what really pushed me to get this done.”

The library, which opened last year, is just past the corner of Winnie Road and Belleview Avenue.

Then Levy had a thought: what if she could put her own book in that library?

Using inspiration from around her—Levy describes herself as beach-obsessed—she wrote a book about a young girl who overcomes insecurity to act on her dreams. In between the state of wake and sleep, she sets sail on a giant oyster shell in a sea of her tears and discovers an enchanted sand castle, according to the book summary. This sand castle has its trickeries, but reveals the secrets to believing in herself. The book is ideal for ages 7 to 11.

Levy self-published her book in order to keep it in its truest form. She was also able to use the beach near her home and the neighborhood in which she lives as inspiration.

“I can really walk to a location in my book near where I live,” Levy said.

Levy dedicated the book to her two children, Bryce, 6, and Brody, 3, who she wants to inspire to act on their dreams, like the main character.

“The Sand Castle of Dreams” is available for $14.99 on Amazon.
